Watles Ski Area

The sunny ski area in the west of South Tyrol

Watles Ski Area is part of the Sesvenna Range, located at the tripoint between Italy, Switzerland and Austria. The ski area’s wide slopes make it ideal for families.

Of all the ski areas that comprise Ortler Ski Arena, Watles has the most sunshine hours. There are modern lifts and perfectly groomed slopes for beginners and leisure skiers alike. At Watles, there are no long queues. The mild temperatures and panoramic views of the surrounding mountains keep skiers out on the slopes until the evening hours. Watles Ski School offers carving and snowboarding lessons, a fun park, and a popular ski kindergarten called Bubo Kinderpark.

Watles Ski Area is ideal for devotees of Nordic sports: the ski area’s Schlinig Nordic Ski Centre, a venue for many international cross-country competitions, is a hub for the local and international cross-country scene. Hikers and snowshoers will also find real challenges here.

Ski touring enthusiasts will find excellent routes for novices and experts alike at the winter sports area of Watles. For years, the ski area of Watles has been working to come up with options that make it possible for skiing and ski touring to safely coexist. The route to the Höferalm alpine pastures is particularly worthwhile.

    The Höferalm Route
The route follows the new winter hiking trail to Höfer Alm alpine pastures. The ascent up Watles is to the right of the run, up to the summit.

Meanwhile, the annual ski touring race is nothing less than legendary.

Experienced instructors, who offer the little ones an exciting ski-related programme into the afternoon, supervise the popular Bubo Ski Kindergarten at Watles Ski Area. Bubo is open Sundays through Fridays from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The kindergarten has two magic carpets, a ski carousel, a snow igloo and much more. In addition to plenty of playground equipment and outdoor activities, Bubo offers a children’s dining room at Plantapatsch Restaurant, a warm-up room just for the kids, and a children-friendly restroom.

The four-kilometre-long natural sledging trail at the winter sports area of Watles is probably one of the best sled runs in South Tyrol. For many locals, a trip to the sledding trail is a permanent fixture on the winter agenda. Easily accessible by chairlift, you can whiz safely down into the valley along the sledging trail. You’ll also find good places for families to stop and get a bite to eat at both the summit and the valley stations.
